What to do with your BUMPY, BOBBLY and HAIRY yarn stash?!?!? MAKE A SCARF!!!

I think EVERYONE with a yarn stash out there has that bag of bumpy, bobbly, hairy yarn that you bought because it was SOOOO PRETTY and now you just can't figure out what to do with it.  You've tried, but frankly, stitches are hard to see (especially in crochet) and it's a daunting task just to keep your stitch count even.  So I've sat down and come up with two different crochet patterns that are QUICK and EASY to make.

The first is the CHAIN SCARF. The flower pattern is found here.

CHAIN SCARF

MATERIALS:

  • approx. 4 oz bulky OR super bulky yarn
  • size K crochet hook
  • yarn needle
BINDING: Leaving a 4 inch tail, chain 50. Finish off with a 4 inch tail. This will be used to bind the chains together.  Set aside.

SCARF:  Crochet a chain until all yarn is used.  Leaving approx 4" on each end for tying to secure.

FINISHING: Take the chain you made for the scarf portion and wrap around arm snugly (see pic below).  Overlap ends and tie together using 4" tail.  THEN, take your chain of 50 and wrap securely around the overlapped ends that you tied together.  Use the yarn needle to secure the ends of the chain INTO the solid piece you have made by wrapping the 50 chain around the bundle of chains.

Wear your Chain Scarf with a detachable flower.  You can find it here

Or you can wear it without the flower with the binding to the side.

OR you can wear it with the binding to the back.

Next pattern I came up with was the GRANNY SCARF.  Most people, no matter how long they have been crocheting, have at one time learned to make a granny square.  And since the granny is worked into the SPACES instead of into the stitches, it makes working with these bumpy, bobbly and hairy yarns much easier.

GRANNY SCARF

MATERIALS:

  • approx. 6 oz Bulky OR Super Bulky yarn
  • size K crochet hook
  • yarn needle
Row 1: Chain 13, 2 dc in 4th ch from hook.  * skip 2 ch, 3 dc in next ch.  Repeat from * across.
Row 2: Ch 3, turn, *skip 3 dc, work 3 dc in space before next 3 dc. Repeat from * across. Dc in last dc.
Row 3: Ch 3, turn. 2 dc in same space as turn chain.  *Skip 3 dc, work 3 dc in space before next 3 dc. Repeat from * across.
Repeat rows 2 and 3 until desired length.  Finish off.

This Granny Scarf was crocheted to a length of 60" and then the ends stitched together to form and infinity scarf, then single crocheted around both sides of the scarf to give it more stability. I like to double wrap to form a cowl.

This Granny Scarf was made with a glittery, hairy yarn.  I used two small skeins and crocheted until I ran out.  Then wove the ends in to finish off.

I hope these patterns help you to clear out your stash and get you some cute cuddly scarves!!!

Be Blessed!!!
