Meandering Paw Prints over the Rainbow Bridge Afghan FREE Crochet pattern

Last month I received a private message from a fellow stitcher named Doug Speeckaert. He had been inspired by my Meandering Paw Prints scarf pattern after his cat Snoopy had passed. He wanted to crochet a memory tribute and so he set to work expanding on my scarf pattern. When he sent the picture I asked if he would share his calculations....because I KNEW others would be asking for this. He graciously handed over all of his notes inserted into my pattern!!! So I bring to you my very FIRST collaborative pattern!!!

MEANDERING PAW PRINTS over the RAINBOW BRIDGE

GAUGE is not important.

SIZE: can be made any size you wish!!  Worked with size 4/medium/worsted weight yarn and an H hook. Pattern is worked over a multiple of 20 sts + 2. 

DETAILS: 

Pic shown above afghan is worked over 180 stitches and is 5 complete color repeats of the 6 colors shown red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple (each color band is worked over 4 rows after the first color band which is worked over 5). Doug used approx. 7 oz of each color and used a size H hook.  It fits a full size bed with drape on each side.

Pic shown above Afghan was worked over 120 stitches and makes a nice sized lap afghan. I used the 7 colors of the rainbow worked from the outside of the rainbow to the inside (red to lavender) with only one band of lavender in the center and then back out to red. I also finished the final band of red the same as the beginning (row 1 – 5) only reversed so that my paw prints were not stacked directly on top of each other. Each color band was worked over 4 rows, except the first and last color bands as previously stated. This afghan measured 41” x 33”.   My blanket weighs just over 1 lb (16.5 oz). If you have 2.5 ounces of each color you should have plenty to finish one this size.

Here is Meandering Paw Prints over the Rainbow Bridge with a tiny white scalloped edging. It sort of reminds me of clouds! These instructions are at the end of the pattern.

TERMS AND ABBREVIATIONS USED:

Ch – chain

Dc – double crochet

Sk – skip

Sp – space

Sl st – slip stitch

St(s) – stitch (stitches)

NOTE:

1)      Ch 2 at beginning of row does NOT count as a stitch.

2)      Dc in last sk st: Insert the hook into the skipped stitch indicated and continue with your dc in the same manner as the other dc. This binds the two sts together into a cross stitch. Pics shown below

Chain Multiple of 20’s + 2. (Example 40 + 2, 60 + 2, 80 + 2, etc).  Unless you want to start with a 

Foundation Double Crochet then simply work a multiple of 20.

Row 1: Working in the back ridge of the starting ch, dc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across.

Row 2: Ch 2, turn. Dc 4, ch 4, sk 2 sts, dc 18, *ch4, sk 2 sts **, dc18. Repeat from *across ending at **.  Dc in last 14.

Row 3: Ch 2, turn. Dc 12. * Ch 1, sk 1, dc next st, 2 sc in ch sp, dc next st, ch 1, sk 1 **, dc 14. Repeat from * across ending at **.  Dc in last 2.

Row 4: Ch 2, turn. Dc 3. *Ch 1, sk 2, dc next st, dc in last sk st (see note 2), ch 1, sk 1 **, dc 16.  Repeat from * across ending at **.  Dc in last 13.

Row 5: Ch 2, turn. Dc across.

Row 6: Ch 2, turn. Dc 9. *Ch 4, sk 2, ** dc18.  Repeat from * across ending at **. Dc in last 9.

Row 7: Ch 2, turn. Dc 7. *Ch 1, sk 1, dc next st, 2 sc in ch sp, dc next st, ch 1, sk 1 **, dc next 14.  Repeat from * across ending at **. Dc in last 7.

Row 8: Ch 2, turn. Dc 8, *Ch 1, sk 2, dc next st, dc in last sk st, ch 1, sk 1**, dc 16.  Repeat from * across ending at **. Dc in last 8.

Row 9: Ch 2, turn. Dc across.

Row 10: Ch 2, turn. Dc 6. *Ch 4, sk 2**, dc 18.  Repeat from * across ending at **. Dc in last 12.

Row 11: Ch 2, turn. Dc 10. *Ch 1, sk 1, dc next st, 2 sc in ch sp, dc next st, ch 1, sk 1 **, dc 14.  Repeat from * across ending at **. Dc in last 4.

Row 12: Ch 2, turn. Dc 5. *Ch 1, sk 2, dc next st, dc in last sk st, ch 1, sk 1 **, dc 16.  Repeat from * across ending at **. Dc in last 11.

Row 13: Ch 2, turn. Dc across.

Row 14: Ch 2, turn. Dc 12. *Ch 4, sk 2**, dc 18.  Repeat from * across ending at **. Dc in last 6.

Row 15: Ch 2, turn. Dc 4. *Ch 1, sk 1, dc next st, 2 sc in ch sp, dc next st, ch 1, sk 1**, dc 14. Repeat from * across ending at **. Dc in last 10.

Row 16: Ch 2, turn. Dc 11. *Ch 1, sk 2, dc next st, dc in last sk st, ch 1, sk 1 **, dc 16.  (Repeat from * across ending at **. Dc in last 5.

Row 17: Ch 2, turn. Dc across.

Row 18: Ch 2, turn. Dc 8. *Ch 4, sk 2 **, dc 18.  Repeat from * across ending at **. Dc in last 10.

Row 19: Ch 2, turn. Dc 8. *Ch 1, sk 1, dc next st, 2 sc in ch sp, dc next st, ch 1, sk 1 **, dc 14.  Repeat from * across ending at **. Dc in last 6.

Row 20: Ch 2, turn. Dc 7. *Ch 1, sk 2, dc next st, dc in last sk st, ch 1, sk 1 **, dc 16.  Repeat from * across ending at **. Dc in last 9.

Row 21: Ch 2, turn. Dc across.

Row 22: Ch 2, turn. Dc 14. *Ch 4, sk 2 **, dc 18.  Repeat from * across ending at **.  Dc in last 4.

Row 23: Ch 2, turn. Dc 2. *Ch 1, sk 1, dc next st, 2 sc next ch sp, dc next st, ch 1, sk 1 **, dc 14.  Repeat from * across ending at **. Dc in last 12.

Row 24: Ch 2, turn. Dc 13. *Ch 1, sk 2, dc next st, dc last sk st, ch 1, sk 1 **, dc 16.  Repeat from * across ending at **. Dc in last 3.

Row 25: Ch 2, turn. Dc across.

Repeat rows 2-25.  Finish off when desired length is reached.

EDGING: (optional)

Join edging yarn to first stitch of last row. Work 3 sc in this stitch. *Sk next st, 5 dc in next st, sk next st, sc next st. Repeat from * across. Work 3 sc in the top of ch 2 at end of row. Working evenly down the side of the afghan repeat the stitches the same as you worked across the top of the afghan, only now you will be going into the ends of the rows instead of the tops of the stitches. You should have 2 scallops per color change (each scallop should cover 2 row ends. Although my first and last scallops on the sides are stretched over 3 rows). Continue the stitching sequence around the entire afghan. Sl st in first sc to join. Finish off and weave in all ends.

Afghan measures 50" x 36". Sandi made this one using less than 3 Caron Cakes!!!

Afghan measures 68" x 48". Sheri used Loops and Threads Impeccable, 2 skeins of each color
(heather, gold, soft taupe, pumpkin, chocolate)

Afghan measures 24" x 31". Michelle used Miragood Basics for this afghan.
Each color skein would stitch up about 1 2/3 row. I LOVE the effect!!!
